The Chief Executive Officer of African Association of Accountants General (AAAG) Mr. Fredrick Riaga delivered an address at the Stakeholder Engagement Forum hosted by the Financial Reporting Council (FRC) of Nigeria in Kigali, Rwanda, on June 20, 2025, where he emphasised the need for strengthened systems and regulations to enhance efficient public finance management across the continent. The Forum brought together members of the Nigerian Parliament Oversight Committees. His intervention at the Forum focused on theme “Strengthening Accounting Regulations in Sub-Sahara Africa”.
In his presentation, Mr. Riaga emphasized accountability as the bedrock of public trust in governance, which he said is anchored in collaboration, professional competence, institutional integrity, and transparency.
“Demand for credible, inclusive, and results-driven public financial management (PFM) has increased, particularly across Africa. It is thus imperative that actors across all levels of government act decisively and collaboratively to transform Africa’s public financial management landscape,” he said.
To achieve accountability and public trust in the management of public finances, he noted, countries across Africa must elevate accountability from a compliance obligation to a governance imperative, commit to institutional and capacity reform at all levels, open up public finance to citizens and the Civil Society, and deepen collaboration, partnerships, as well as knowledge and experience sharing for greater results.
AAAG continues to work with Member States to build trust in public financial management by promoting transparency, accountability, and collaboration among Member Countries, and thus, supporting Africa’s sustainable development and prosperity in the long run.
