The AAAG Success Story
Since its establishment in 2023, the African Association of Accountants General has rapidly established itself as a transformative force in public financial management (PFM) across Africa. With a bold vision and the support of the African Union, AAAG has grown its membership from 13 to 23 countries, developed and implemented a comprehensive 2024-2028 Strategic Plan, and successfully transitioned from a sub-regional institution to a Pan-African Entity.
The Association has strengthened its governance structure through robust policies and improved institutional capacity. For membership support and capacity building, AAAG has introduced technical initiatives, including support for rolling out IPSAS implementation guidelines, technical workshops, webinars, tailored capacity-building programs, and a PFM gap analysis to identify discrepancies between existing structures, practices, and best practices in public sector accounting, particularly focusing on the transition to accrual-based accounting as prescribed by International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS).
AAAG has also developed advisory notes on digitization and sustainability reporting, provided policy advisories to ensure the adoption of best PFM practices, and published policy papers to inform decision-making.
Key achievements include hosting annual conferences since 2024. The First Conference, held in Lesotho in February 2024, brought together over 860 delegates, while the second conference, held in Arusha, Tanzania, in December 2024, more than doubled the number of delegates to almost 1,700 participants. The Third Conference is scheduled to take place in Accra, Ghana, with over 2,000 professionals and experts from across Africa.
Furthermore, AAAG has entered into strategic collaborations with global partners, including the ACCA, CIPFA, AFROSAI-E, PAFA, API, IPSASB, Aston University, and the Global Fund; and is pursuing strategic partnerships with the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, African Development Bank, and other globally recognized lead institutions.
These milestones highlight AAAG’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and financial sustainability, making it a strong partner for development organizations driving impactful reforms across Africa.
